When Ferris Bueller said “Life comes at you pretty fast…If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you might miss it,” he couldn’t have been talking about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other social media platform because they were still almost 20 years away from being invented. He may as well have been, though.

If there’s one thing I learned in my seven plus years of working in the social media marketing landscape, it’s never get to comfortable with a social media platform’s interface because it can change at any moment. In the early 2010’s, it seemed like Facebook was changing the appearance of its news feed every other week. Twitter began tinkering with its timeline features shortly after that and continues to add little nuances to the user experience.

Now, it’s LinkedIn’s turn. If you haven’t heard, LinkedIn is changing the interface of its platform and it’s going to have an effect on the appearance of your company page. For the most part, much of the content will be the same. There will still be the company overview, company posts and a jobs section. It’s just going to look a little different.

When I look at this list of updated changes, there are two big opportunities that jump out to me for businesses.

  1. The Life Tab will feature a section at the top that says “Meet some of our leaders at…” This means the LinkedIn profile of your senior level-executives will be featured prominently and easily searchable for anyone visiting your company page. You’ll want to make sure their profiles are up to date and complete. Here’s a helpful checklist we created to walk you through the profile assessment. After all, what kind of message would your business send if your CEO hasn’t updated their profile since 2009?
  2. There will be an “Employee Perspectives” section in the Life Tab featuring articles that your employees have published on LinkedIn. Have you used the “Publish a post” feature before? We recommend all our clients utilize this feature whenever they post a new company blog or get a new byline published. It’s very easy and a terrific way to expand the reach your organization has already received. Currently, when you publish a post it is only seen by your connections on LinkedIn. With this new update, your published posts will have a chance to also be seen by anyone who visits your company page. Not only will your company be showcased as a thought leader, you will also demonstrate your influence in the industry. It’s a win-win all the way around!

The good news is these updates are still in the beta version so you still have plenty of time to get your ducks in a row. Don’t wait too long, though, because you’ll want to hit the ground running on this. Believe me, your followers (and employees) will take notice..
